A twentieth-century British author, poet, academic, and critic associated with The Movement, he is best known for The Laughing Hyena (1953), The Year of the Monkey (1956), and other volumes of poetry. He was the 1980 recipient of the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry. He studied at Downing College, Cambridge and taught in Japan, Thailand, Egypt and Singapore before returning to England.
