Remembered best for his paintings of New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia skyscrapers, this American Impressionist artist also painted Asian and European city scenes, as well as portraits, landscapes, and Renoir-like images of people at leisure. His best known works include Metropolitan Life Tower, Summer, and Taj Mahal, Afternoon. He trained first at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in his native Philadelphia, and then at Paris' renowned Academie Julian. His first successful painting was a 1902 piece titled Broad Street, New York.
