A prolific American writer, he published thirty novels and several hundred short stories over the course of his career. His best-known works include Come Spring (1940), House Divided (1947), and The Unconquered (1953). He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1910 and subsequently worked as a reporter for the Boston American.
