Award-winning poet who is best remembered for such poetry collections as The Form of Loss and The Astronomers. He received the Bollingen Prize in Poetry for a 1989 collection entitled For Louis Pasteur. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Years later, he taught at nearby Duke University.
