From 1961 until 1964, this Labour Party politician served as President of Brazil. Previously, he had served as Minister of Labor, Industry, and Trade; President of the Federal Senate; and Vice President of Brazil. A soccer star in his youth, he was a member of Brazil's Sport Club Internacional. To appease his father, he studied law at Rio Grande do Sul Federal University.
