A Bulgarian prose writer whose work was heavily influenced by his childhood love of nature, he is best known for Wolfish Nights, Wild Bird, When the Frost Melts, and Chernishka. His later works include such historical and philosophical novels as The Queen of Tarnovo and Legend of Sibin. He studied finance at Sofia University before publishing his first short story collection, Tempting Glitters, in 1938.
