Poet known for Sphere: The Form of a Motion, A Coast of Trees, and other nature-themed works. He was a two-time recipient of the National Book Award for Poetry. After completing his World War II service in the U.S. Navy, he attended Wake Forest University and the University of California, Berkeley.
