British poet known for such collections as Devotions, The Falls, and The Mystery of Things. Also an academic, he taught at the University of Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin University. He was born in Yorkshire, England and later attended King's College, Cambridge. He published his debut literary work, The Dwelling-Place, in 1977.
