Remembered for his contributions to the sport of fly fishing and for his conservation efforts on behalf of Atlantic Salmon, Wulff was also a visual artist and the author of books such as Lee Wulff's Handbook of Freshwater Fishing (1939) and Trout on a Fly (1986). He transferred from San Diego State College to Stanford University, earning an engineering degree from the latter school. He later moved to Paris, France, where he studied art at the Academie Delecluse.
