Known for his writings on the Napoleonic Wars and military history, this historian, author, and University of South Carolina professor published such titles as The Epoch of Napoleon and On War and Leadership: The Words of Combat Commanders from Frederick the Great to Norman Schwarzkopf. After earning a degree in physics from North Carolina's Wake Forest University, he served during World War II in the United States Army Air Corps. He later received a PhD in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
