Known mononymously as Sabu and remembered for his roles in such 1940s American movies as Arabian Nights and Jungle Book, he also famously appeared in the 1937 British movie Elephant Boy. Also a pilot with the United States Army Air Forces, he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service in World War II. He was born in Mysore, India, as the son of an elephant driver. When he was thirteen years old, he was discovered by American filmmaker Robert Flaherty, who cast him in Elephant Boy.
