A twentieth-century American novelist, she is best known for such works as Armadillo in the Grass and Owning Jolene. The latter work won an American Academy of Arts and Letters Literature Award. She studied at the University of Texas at Austin. She began writing her debut novel, Armadillo in the Grass, in 1962.
