Most famous for directing the 1970 film Kelly's Heroes and the 1968 war feature Where Eagles Dare, he is also remembered for his work on High Road to China and Zee and Co. Before becoming a film director, he trained at New York's famous Actors Studio and appeared in episodes of Gunsmoke and Perry Mason.
