Canadian alpine ski star Erik Guay will miss Pyeongchang Olympics with severe back pain

Severe back pain will prevent Erik Guay from competing in a fourth and final Olympics.

The 36-year-old alpine skier from Mont-Tremblant has been forced out of the upcoming Pyeongchang Games and will not be around four years from now in Beijing.

I can definitely say I will not be there, Guay said Wednesday. This was my final shot at the Games.

He competed at the Olympics in Torino, Vancouver and Sochi and fell just short of the podium, finishing fourth in Super G in 2006 and fifth in both the Super G and downhill in 2010.

With 24 World Cup podiums since 2004, he is Canadas career leader. He also won the Super G at the 2017 world championships and the downhill at the 2011 worlds.

But he has battled back pain for months, and competed at only one stop on the World Cup this season, Val Gardena in mid-December, because of the problem. He was 12th in Super G and 32nd in the downhill.
